Chapter 4
The next day, Jin Hee met up with the girls at the gym. The boys were just about finished with their basketball practice. When Kwon saw Jin Hee, he immediately waved at her. The girls noticed the little gestures the two would be making and immediately jumped to the conclusion that they must like each other.
Once their practice was over, the boys headed over to where the girls were. Jinwoon gave Ji Yeon a big hug, him being all sweaty.
“Ew, gross babe!” Ji Yeon yelled.
“Aw… you know you like it” Jinwoon said with his famous ‘aegyo.’
Seulong and Changmin were busy talking to Seung Ah, joking around about nothing. Kwon and Jin Hee greeted each other.
“Hey! Did you wait long?” he asked.
“Nope just got some studying done in the library then headed over.”
He nodded his head.
“So you ready to put your skills to the test?” he asked.
“Not really…”
“Ah… you’ll be fine… let me grab the guys so we can change and head out…”
“Alright”
With that, he called the others and within ten minutes, they came back all refreshed for another game of basketball.
Once all of them got to the park, the girls sat on the bleachers while the guys immediately went to the courts to start shooting around. Jin Hee joined them shortly after.
“So how are we gonna do this if there’s five people?” Jin Hee asked.
“How about two on two with interchanging substitutes…” Changmin said.
“I’ll sit out first then,” Jinwoon said.
“So how about Kwon and Jin Hee vs. Changmin and I?” Seulong said.
“Sounds good… I trained her… so you’re definitely gonna lose.” Kwon said.
“Alright then, you’re on” Changmin said.
“I get the chick…” Seulong said.
“Yah! I have a name! And why do I have to get the tall one?!”
“Just play girl, you got this!” Kwon said.
The two girls cheered on as the game started. Changmin checked the ball and Kwon immediately started to dribble, contemplating his next move. At the corner of his eye, he saw Jin Hee run to get open; he passed the ball. Jin Hee caught the ball, only to be blocked by a tall Seulong. She started dribbling the ball.
“Where you gonna go? I’ll go easy on you.” He said.
She smirked, faked to left, then made an inside drive for a lay up, making a basket in with ease.
“Thanks but I don’t think I’ll need it,” she said patting Seulong on the shoulder.
The girls watched as their best friend and Kwon cream the daylights out of the other two. Changmin got tired and tapped Jinwoon to sub and even then it wasn’t doing any justice.
“You know…. Kwon and Jin Hee… they look kinda cute together yea?” Seung Ah said.
“Now that you mention it, yeah, they kinda do.”
“You think she likes him?”
“It’s kinda hard to tell… she never really had a boyfriend before… And lord knows the last time she had a crush on a guy.”
“I think they should totally date…”
Ji Yeon laughed and nodded.
After a half hour of playing, the five came back, all drenched with sweat.
“Have fun playing out there?” Ji Yeon asked.
“Yo… I dunno about you… but your friend Jin Hee over there… she got skill… “ Seulong said in between breaths.
“Are you sure you weren’t going easy on me?” Jin Hee asked after taking a sip from her water bottle.
“Girl! I was trying so hard. Yo Kwon wtf man? You made a basketball beast.”
“What can I say? She’s coachable.” Kwon said.
“We’re gonna play some more right?” Jinwoon asked.
“Actually I’m gonna sit this one out. You guys go ahead.” Jin Hee said.
“EFF man it’s so frickin hot… I’m gonna die in this heat…”
“Well, you could take your shirts off…” Seung Ah said.
Both Ji Yeon and Jin Hee nudged her shoulder as if she said something wrong.
“What?! It’s hot and those shirts are sticking to their bodies… Girl’s just trying to help them out.”
The guys just laughed.
“Well I don’t care… It’s hot.” Seulong said taking off his sweaty tee.
The other guys followed pursuit and proceeded back to the court.
Seung Ah squealed once they left and Ji Yeon just shook her had. She started to give a lecture to Seung Ah on how it’s sometimes NOT good being straightforward. While that was going Jin Hee did have her eyes on someone. And it wasn’t like she wanted to either.
Seung Ah was right about Kwon. Who knew THAT was hiding underneath all that clothing. I guess he wasn’t skinny and scrawny. He did have a body.
Aish, Jin Hee what are you doing? It’s Jo Kwon… you thinking about him like that is like committing a sin! You can’t possibly like him right? Besides, clearly him and Jin Ah have something going on, she thought.
“Hey Jin Hee you alright?” Ji Yeon asked.
“Huh? Oh… yeah I’m fine just tired… that game was pretty intense….”
“Hey Jin Hee… you got some drool right there….” Seung Ah said.
“Oh what?” she said wiping her mouth.
“Haha…. Just kidding… so eyeing on the boys?”
“Um… no?”
“Lies” Ji Yeon then said.
“We all saw your reaction.” Seung Ah added.
“Look, I don’t really see guys take off their shirts on a daily basis okay. This is your fault Seung Ah! Shoulda kept your mouth shut.”
“Like I said, I did it to help them and look! We got a nice view and they have cooled down bodies… See? Everyone is happy!”
Jin Hee shook her head and smiled. The three continued to watch the boys play until it was time to go.
**************************
A few days later was the boys’ final basketball game and everyone and their mother was gonna be there. Jin Hee took a seat by Ji Yeon and Seung Ah. It was their night off. The cheerleading squad would always be there to cheer on for the boys’ basketball team while the step team would go for the girls’ basketball team.
Kwon, leading his team, shot the first basket, making SeongJi High lead. It continued on until the final seconds of the second half. The team huddled up for their final play.
“Alright, one more and we win” the coach said. “So here’s what we’re going to do. Let’s do the ‘Up the Ladder’ play. Seulong I want you to fake to the left and pass to Jinwoon. He should then pass to Kwon for the shot. Changmin, I need you and Kyeongmin to be on defense for this one since they will charge at Kwon. Kwon, I just need you to get open.”
“You got it coach” Kwon said.
“Alright, let’s win this guys… Team on three… 1, 2, 3….”
“TEAM”
The team broke off and went on the court to their positions. Once the whistle blew, Seulong dribbled the ball tricking his opponent by faking. He passed the ball to Jinwoon who looked for Kwon. Kwon ran to get open and caught the ball. Changmin and his teammate Kyeongmin blocked the other two opposing players but were unaware of the third coming at Kwon. Kwon made an inside drive to make a shot in the basket where he bumped hard with another player from the opposite team. The force caused him to fall, slide and hit the wall hard, injuring his arm through the impact.
Jin Hee, Ji Yeon, and Seung Ah gasped at what happened. All they saw was Kwon curled up in a ball, gripping his arm. Although the ball went in and their team won, they were more concerned about Kwon.
Seulong, Changmin, and Jinwoon ran to Kwon’s side.
“Hyung you alright?” Jinwoon asked.
“My arm…” he said.
“Can you move it?” Changmin asked.
“Not really.”
The coach along with the medical team came to help Kwon. Seung Ah and Ji Yeon kept their eyes on what was going on, but guilt fled over Jin Hee’s mind. She felt it was her fault that Kwon got hurt. Since he spent most of his time working and helping her out with her training, he never really had the time for his own training. Plus, him actually getting hurt proved to her he wasn’t focused. Seeing what was going on, she didn’t want to be there anymore.
“Hey guys, I think I’m gonna go. I’m not feeling so well” Jin Hee said.
“You okay? You want us to go with you?” Seung Ah asked.
“No no it’s okay… let me know if Kwon is okay.” She said, smiling weakly. With that she left.

Chapter 5
The next day, Jin Hee avoided everyone in school. She wanted to be alone. Even, Seung Ah and Ji Yeon tried to talk to her, but she said she just wanted to be alone. In fact, she was in a really bad mood from victimizing herself by saying it was her fault for Kwon getting hurt. She was not having it at all today.
Jin Hee was putting the rest of her books in her locker when Jin Ah came and slammed her locker shut.
Jin Hee closed her eyes and took a breath from punching the daylights out of Jin Ah and faced her.
“What do you want Jin Ah?”
“Since Kwon was too busy helping you out, he couldn’t concentrate on winning the game last night.”
Jin Hee then felt taken aback at what Jin Ah just said.
“You’re blaming me for him getting hurt… Even though the team won,” she asked opening her locker again, finishing what she started. Jin Ah walked around her.
“You’re damn right I am. I thought I told you to stay away from Kwon.”
“I don’t have to do ANYTHING you tell me to do. Don’t push my buttons today Jin Ah I am NOT in the mood.”
Jin Ah scoffed.
“Yah… I’m warning you one last time to stay away from him. You know I thought you were smart…”
“Jin Ah… one last time I’m warning you… to leave me alone” Jin Hee said.
“You know what, why don’t you just do the school a favor and just leave. You’re nothing but a nuisance here and seeing how you blew that game a couple of months ago, I still don’t understand why you’re here…”
That did it for Jin Hee… she slammed the locker so loudly that everyone in the hallway just froze and the place went silent. She turned to Jin Ah.
“You know what Jin Ah, I just had it up to here with your BS… what the hell is your problem?”
“You’re my problem! I told you to stay away! Why won’t you listen?!”
“Because I’m not one of your stupid b!tches who kisses the ground you walk upon. So do me a favor and leave me the F*** alone!” Jin Hee said pushing her away.
The crowd ‘Oh-ed’ as she grabbed her bag and started to leave. Just then Jin Ah grabbed her shoulder and pushed her causing Jin Hee to pushed her back. Jin Ah then slapped her in the face. Jin Hee then pounced on her and both girls fell to the floor. Punches and hair pulling were involved.
Everyone there formed a crowd, causing more people to run to the scene.
“FIGHT!” one called.
“Between who?” another asked.
“Jin Hee and Jin Ah!” he said, Jinwoon and Ji Yeon who were walking to class together to see what was going on.
Meanwhile, the fight was going on strong. Jin Ah was able to pin Jin Hee down and socked her in the eye, making her flinch in pain.
“Teaches you to mess with me!” Jin Ah yelled.
Jin Hee used her legs to push her over so that she would fall to the side and was about to lay a punch on her, when the principal showed up.
“WHAT’S GOING ON HERE?!” he yelled.
The crowd dispersed and made way for him to see Jin Ah and Jin Hee, both on the floor.
“Both of you! My office now!” he said not letting any of the two respond.
***********************
Jin Hee sat in the principal’s office with an ice pack on her eye. Jin Ah really got her good because upon the stinging, her eye started to darken. She was waiting for her turn to tell her story on what happened. Just then, Jin Ah came out and gave her glare while walking out.
The principal motioned Jin Hee to come into his office. Taking a seat, she looked around, fearful that she would get expelled.
“Okay, so I heard Jin Ah’s side. So what happened?” he asked.
“I was at my locker minding my business. Jin Ah came up to me and started interrogating plus accusing me of things. I’m sorry I was wrong, I was in a bad mood, I should have kept my temper.”
“It’s true that you should have kept yourself from fighting. I’m going to let you off with a warning. You’re a really intelligent student and a great asset to the basketball team here. However, if I catch you fighting again….”
“I understand sir. Thank you.”
“Alright, you may go now.”
After school, Jin Hee met up with Ji Yeon, Seung Ah, and Jinwoon to walk home. Jin Hee’s black eye clearly was being seen.
“That looks like it hurt” Jinwoon said.
“You think?” Jin Hee responded.
“Man, I wish I would’ve been there! I could’ve gotten my kicks in” Seung Ah said.
“So are you expelled?” Ji Yeon asked.
“No, I was only let out with a warning. I’m glad.”
“Well on the other hand, you sure gave Jin Ah a whooping! Where did you learn to fight like that?” Jinwoon asked.
“I didn’t… I just… lashed out…”
“Well, good that you did! Shows that b!tch to mess with you…” Seung Ah said.
“Yeah but she left a mark!” Jin Hee said, pointing to her eye.
“Oh but still, she knows to not mess with you again… since the both of you were let out with a warning….” Ji Yeon said.
“She told me to stay away from Kwon…” Jin Hee then said.
“What?” all three of them said.
“Yeah, I don’t get it. She blamed me for him hurting his arm at the game….”
“But that wasn’t your fault…” Jinwoon said.
“Not according to her…. Maybe she’s right…”
“You CANNOT be serious right now!” Seung Ah said.
“Well maybe if Kwon didn’t help me in basketball so much, he would have concentrated on his game. The deal was over a long time ago and he still comes to help me regardless…”
“Kwon is the kind of person whom when he starts something, he makes sure he gets it done, no matter how long it takes. Maybe he’s helping you to perfect your skill,” Jinwoon said.
Jin Hee shrugged.
“Speaking of Kwon…” he continued, “he was looking for you today.”
“He was?”
“Yeah, I dunno. He had a worried look on his face. Maybe he heard about you and Jin Ah and wanted to check if you were alright.”
“That’s really sweet if he did that…” Seung Ah said.
“Yeah, sling and all…”
“How’s he?” Ji Yeon asked.
“He’s good. Thank god the finals are over because that would have cost us. But now he has time to recover.”
Jin Hee just nodded. Everyone could tell she was thinking.
“So this is my stop, I’ll see you guys tomorrow.”
“Hey Jin Hee” Seung Ah said.
She turned to face them.
“Stop victimizing yourself… it’s not your fault.” She said. With that, they all left.
That evening, Jin Hee skipped out on dinner and spent a majority of her time in her room, just thinking. Even though her friends had told her not victimize or blame herself for what happened at Kwon’s game, she can’t help but feel like it was her fault. Her mom came in, and handed her a glass of water. She took it and took a sip out of it.
“Looks like she got you good,” her mom said, trying to lighten up the mood, checking out her eye.
Jin Hee just smiled weakly.
“I’ve been meaning to ask you… who is that boy who comes over to play basketball with you everyday?”
“His name is Jo Kwon, omma.”
“Oh… new boyfriend?”
“No, more like a coach… he’s just helping me out….”
“Ah I see…”
Then there was silence.
“He got hurt the other day… at the game…”
“Oh I’m sorry to hear that….”
“I feel like it’s my fault… since you know, he’s been helping me and all. It’s like I’m getting better and he’s getting worse.”
“Sounds like you like the boy…” her mom said.
“Omma!”
“What? It’s fine to like someone. And he seems like a nice young man.”
“Omma, we’re just friends… that’s all…”
“That’s just it my dear…. It always starts out as being friends….” She said, with that, she smiled and left her room.

Chapter 6
Not knowing why her mother said that made Jin Hee think even more. She decided to shoot around to blow off steam. Every shot she took though, she ended up missing. Just like in the beginning.
“Change how you’re shooting” a voice called. Jin Hee knew that voice way too well. She turned around and saw Kwon, with a sling to hold his injured arm.
“Hey…” she said.
“Hey… how’s your eye?”
“It’s swollen… but I’ll live”
He nodded.
“Um…. How’s your arm?” she asked.
“Swollen, but I’ll live….”
She smirked at his funny remark, but it wasn’t enough to rid of her frustrations. She started shooting around again.
“So… I heard about the fight…”
“You and everyone else….”
“I can’t believe you did that….”
“Me neither… I’m sorry, I knew you and Jin Ah are like friends, but she pissed me off… so if you’re gonna tell me off… just do it now…”
“What?”
“Just say what you need to say Jo Kwon…” she said preparing for another shot. Before she took it, Kwon snatched the ball with his uninjured hand.
“I’m glad you stood up to her. I’ve noticed how she had been picking on you all these years.” He said.
“Yeah, like that did anything…” she said with sarcasm.
“You kicked her butt!”
“She kicked mine! I left no scar on her… She got what she wanted….” Then she realized they were arguing for no reason.
“Look… Kwon… I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to yell. I’m just really frustrated. Look we all know how much she likes you. She told me to stay away from you, not like it matters since you two are like together or something. So I can see where she’s coming from…”
She walked to the side of her yard and sat. Kwon followed her and sat next to her.
“I hope you should know Kim Jin Hee, Jin Ah and I were never together. In fact after today, I don’t even think I want to be her friend anymore. I don’t like associating with those kinds of people. It’s just not in my nature to even mind them.”
“Just the things she said… I keep saying to myself ‘ignore her,’ ‘ignore her,’ but I can’t because I end up feeling, oh she’s right. Maybe I am this or I am that.”
“If this is about the game...”
“It’s about everything Kwon, I feel like a failure.”
Kwon then put his hand on her shoulder.
“First of all, you had NOTHING to do with me getting hurt. Just know that. Me helping you was my choice. Second of all, you shouldn’t care what others think about you. You care about yourself . Don’t mind what others say. They have nothing else better to do. Third, you’re not a failure. That was one game that didn’t go your way, one game! It hasn’t happened again has it? Even if it did, you win some, you lose some. Brush it off and move on.”
Jin Hee looked at him.
“Why me?” she asked. “You could’ve helped anyone on the team. Why did you choose to help me? That I don’t understand.”
Kwon smiled.
“Well, for one thing, I needed tutoring, and you’re the smartest one in the whole class.”
“But I mean, you’re still helping me even after I helped you in your tests. You could’ve stopped.”
“I could’ve… but like I said, I choose to help you… and my reason? Because I want to. Is that good enough?”
Jin Hee shrugged. “I guess.”
“Look you need to get your mind off of things. Victimizing yourself isn’t healthy at all and you don’t need that stress. Why don’t we talk about something else.”
“Like?”
“Well, I’d like to know you better…”
Jin Hee looked at him weirdly.
“Eh?!” she said.
“We’ve known each other forever… going to the same school and all, just that I’m a couple of years older… but we never really talked… like friends at least... Hence I don’t know you like that.”
“Oh… okay well what do you wanna know... that you don't already know now?”
From then, for the next three hours, they just spent their time in Jin Hee’s front yard, just talking and telling stories.
The next week, Seulong stopped by Jin Hee’s locker and handed her a piece of paper.
“What’s this?” she asked.
“Kwon told me to give this to you…”
She then took the paper.
“Hey! My messenger services don’t come for free you know… pucker up and pay the price!” he said pointing to his cheek. Jin Hee just pushed his cheek to the side and opened up the letter.
Jin Hee,
Meet me by the bleachers by the soccer field at lunchtime today. I have something for you.
Kwon
She smiled and folded up the letter.
“So… what did he say?” Seulong asked.
“Nothing…” she said taking out the books from her locker, closing it, and walking away.
“Wait… what? Jin Hee! You can’t do that! I gave you the letter!”
Jin Hee laughed. “Doesn’t mean I have to tell you oppa.”
Lunchtime came by and Jin Hee indeed went to the soccer field to meet Kwon.
"Alright Jo Kwon, what is it that is SO important that we are missing lunch?" she asked in a joking manner.
Kwon just laughed and handed her a mini SD card... for her cellphone.
"What is this?" she asked.
"A gift..." he said.
"Well what is it..." she asked again.
"Just sort of my way of saying thanks for helping me out. There's a file in there."
"Oh?"
"Um... why don't you listen to it another time though..."
She nodded and put the SD card in her bag's inside pocket so it wouldn't get lost. After that, he pulled out two bags and handed one to her.
"Oh more gifts?" she asked. Looking inside, she saw food.
"I just thought if we could have lunch together... if you don't mind of course."
Jin Hee smiled again. "Oh no, definitely not, I don't mind."
She thought, Wow, he bought me lunch. No guy friend has ever done that for me. This is really sweet of him.
While eating, he then asked her.
"So you ready for tonight?"
Then she remembered that it was her finals basketball game tonight. With Kwon being injured, she wasn't able to be trained by him anymore, so she trained by herself.
"Yeah, I should be okay..."
"Haha that's what you said the first time," he laughed.
"But I didn't have a good side coach then," she replied, patting his shoulder.
Kwon smiled.
"Oh by the way, I spoke to Jin Ah"
Jin Hee nodded.
"I told her to leave you alone. She didn't sound too happy but I think you're good when it comes to dealing with her."
Jin Hee smiled. "Thanks Kwon."
They continued eating and then talking about random nothings. The two really became closer as friends. Too close, according to Jin Hee, because not seeing him everyday for training made it a little hard for her... she thought, I don't like him.... do I?
A/N Happy New Year Everyone! Hope this Chapter does some justice... we are more than halfway through this story!!! I might actually finish this one. Don't forget to comment and leave feedback... <3 you thanks!
